Formspring and Why it Sucks

After a recent Formspring-inspired TMI Tuesday, we added a Formspring widget to our blog.  In order to do so, we had to sign up for an account with the popular social networking service.  Friends warned us about the hazards of using Formspring; the New York Times referred to it as "An E-vite to Insults and Crude Queries."  Wary of answering - or even reading - a bunch of ridiculous questions from thirteen-year-olds who've never spent the night outside of their parents' homes, we configured the settings so that anonymous users were prohibited from asking us questions.

As of now, there are twenty questions in our inbox and they all appear to be from Formspring, Funny or Die, and Cheezburger Network.  You know, the site responsible for LOLCats.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'd rather get a few poorly-spelled and punctuated questions peppered with leet speak and ending with "kthxbye" from users that happen to be anonymous than one more question bulk-submitted to every Formspring user, usually intended as bait to get me to visit a website, watch a video clip, or reveal my credit card number.  I'm a sex blogger, not a guy who cares for answering questions posed by a corporation that doesn't really give a shit.  Hell, if some Beavis and Butt-Head wannabes want to ask if we've ever scored, we'd answer.  Again, this is a sex blog.

Although we haven't gotten as much use out of our Formspring widget as, say, Good Will, we're leaving the widget up in case someone sees fit to submit a question actually intended for us.  But if you want to ask us a question and need to do so privately or anonymously (i.e. not in the comments), your best bet is to send us an email using the "Email" link on our Blogger profile page.

We had formspring on our old blog and we didn't have any problems with it, but I've heard that it's gone down here since then. Good to know. Not adding it to this blog.

Thanks for the plug and link you 2! I'll admit I've had good luck with my formspring, but I don't necessarily like fishing for questions, which I feel the need to do. If I don't make a post saying "Please use my formspring to ask me something" I almost never get questions (aside from the generic ones that *everyone* with a formspring gets - and honestly I just ignore those).

Anyways...it's definitely not for everyone, but it's been good to me.

As you know, I joined today...seems to be the cool thing to do. But I don't get it. I thought it was a way for ppl to ask me anon questions. Not for the world to ask me stupid immature questions like, do you like to dance? I prefer dirty questions. I'll give it a try, but not sure how long I'll keep it.

Nerdy Wife and Funny Husband: Despite the overly-dramatic title of this entry, I wouldn't say it's a problem, exactly; the frequent emails notifying us of questions we don't intend to answer aren't annoying or anything. It just hasn't helped us interact with our followers thusfar. Twitter has done a better job of that, and for that matter the comments have too.

GoodWill: You've gotten some pretty good questions so far, and we've enjoyed reading your answers! I don't like fishing for questions either; I assume we probably won't get many.

Cougar in Training: Bingo! We prefer dirty questions. We thought we'd be up to our asses in "What's your favorite position?", "When did you last have sex?", "Spit or swallow?" and "How many times have you had sex in one day?" by now. We'll probably keep it up, but imagine it'll be covered in dust and cobwebs this time next month.

I'm with you, I added Formspring, but think I'm going to take the widget off. Most of the questions I've received are from Formspring, and there all asinine. I had high hopes for it, but have been disappointed as well.
